What to expect in your trial lesson

What to expect on your trial (and free of charge) lesson:

Your trial (free of charge) lesson is where I get to do a wonderful meet and greet with you to get to know you and the genre of music you would like to sing and/or play on the piano

We will also talk about your personal long term goals and what you want to achieve in the short term during either your vocal and/or piano lesson.

In terms of a vocal trial lesson, you will get a taste of how I run my lesson starting with proper posture on how to sing efficiently, some warm ups/ vocal exercises and lastly, bring two copies of a song you are most comfortable with that we can work on

In terms of a trial piano lesson, we will start with some warm ups like stretching our fingers before we play the piano, learning about finger numbers and playing an easy song like twinkle little star or a doable short melody of a pop song or classical song.

Teaching Philosophy

“The slower you go, the faster you’ll get there” – John Link
Music has been an integral part of my life and it has been there for me through times of turbulence and joy. As stated by John Link from the quote above and though it is easier said than done, practicing slower to capture the nuances and isolation of each note in the music has been the key to successfully have a solid foundation in honing my craft in my piano and vocal performance.
I believe that studying music, especially voice and piano, can be for everyone when you have the support and patience from a teacher who is there for you in every step whenever you come across an obstacle in your learning process. Music study can be beneficial to everyone who desires to learn an instrument as it teaches and fosters discipline and work ethic. Also, music is like learning another language so this can provide an opportunity for children even adults to improve their communication and expression when it comes to performing in front of an audience. Most importantly, it can bring profound joy and a sense of accomplishment when a song or a piece you learn is complete. I believe everyone can benefit from studying voice and piano even if the end goal can be for enjoyment and fun. However, it does require consistent work ethic, discipline, and mostly practice enjoying singing and playing the piano the way you want regardless of what style of music you play.

My approach to instructing my students is eclectic and I want to take into consideration that every student that I come across can be different and be able to accommodate them according to their learning style. I have had the experience of teaching a student who is interested in classical music and wants to attend competitions and festivals and have the teaching approach to focus on reading, interpretation and performance. On the other hand, I had another one that I teach that is interested in playing pop music and my approach can be more focused on teaching chord progressions, improvisation and learning pieces by rote like using a lead sheet for example. I also have the case of instructing a student who currently have a physical disability and I must take a teaching approach and adapt to what the student is capable of and of course enjoy the lesson I build for them and don’t typically follow the music the student is learning accurately but create the music according to the skill they currently have.
Additionally, I have experience of teaching students primarily from pre-school children until high school, but I am willing and am interested in teaching adults. I am always looking to diverse myself with variety of students of different ages and gain meaningful experience and growth as to become a better vocal and piano teacher. I have had the experience in preparing my students for the RCM exam at the elementary level. With my specialization in vocal music which goes hand in hand with piano, especially with ear training for intervals and chords and can teach students the skills on how to sing while accompanying themselves with piano. I also can teach improvisation of different genres of music and pass on those skills to my students who are interested in creating their own music. Overall, what the student can achieve by taking lessons with me is that they can have the independence and sense of accomplishment of learning and playing a piece on their own and the confidence to build and discover their own musical artistry.
